Salt-fired pottery in Colorado Springs. Learn about this atmospheric firing technique that creates orange-peel texture.
Salt firing is an atmospheric kiln technique where salt (sodium chloride) is introduced into the kiln at peak temperature. The sodium vaporizes and bonds with the silica in the clay, creating a distinctive orange-peel texture and glassy surface directly on the clay body.
At Springs Pottery Studio, we discuss salt firing techniques in our kiln firing workshops and plan to host salt firing events as our program grows.
At Springs Pottery Studio, we teach salt firing as part of our comprehensive pottery curriculum. Whether you're exploring this technique for the first time or deepening an existing practice, our instructors will guide you through the fundamentals and help you develop your skills.
All materials are included in our class fees — clay, glazes, kiln firing, and tools. Our studio is equipped with both gas and electric kilns, giving you access to firing options that most pottery studios in Colorado Springs can't offer.
